Phil Thomas pulled the phone sharply away, his ears still ringing from the sound of Justin’s yelling and cursing.

‘What do you mean she hasn’t been in the fuckin’ pub for weeks?’ he raged. ‘I thought it was her local! You should have nabbed her when you had the fuckin’ chance. Fancy following the wrong car, you useless bastard.’ His anger had left him panting and he paused to regain his breath before he resumed. ‘Eh, I hope that fuckin’ junkie you paid hasn’t warned her off.’

‘No, I don’t think so,’ said Phil, trying to placate him.

‘How d’you know she can be trusted?’

‘Well, I did let her know what would happen to her if she grassed.’

‘I don’t care. I’m taking no fuckin’ chances! I want her out of the picture. She’s too much of a fuckin’ liability.’

‘OK, what do you want me to do?’

Justin was quiet for a moment and Phil guessed he must have been thinking of something.

‘You said the junkie goes in the pub nearly all the time, didn’t you?’

‘Yeah, seems to hang out there a lot, boss.’

‘Right, well I want you in there tomorrow night. As soon as she leaves the pub you ring me straightaway, right?’

‘OK. And what do you want me to do after that?’

‘Fuck all, seeing as I can’t trust you to get anything right.’

Phil felt a tremor of nerves. It didn’t pay to get on the wrong side of Justin Foster so it was important to keep being useful to him.

‘No, I mean, what’s the next job?’ he asked tentatively.

‘Never mind that, I’ve got other things to concentrate on at the moment. Just be there tomorrow night, and don’t fuckin’ let me down, then I’ll think about what to do with you after that. But there’s no way I want you in that Rose and Crown once we’ve dealt with the fuckin’ junkie. Too many people know your face. Anyway, I’ve got someone else working inside the pub.’

‘Who?’

‘You ask too many fuckin’ questions! It’s nobody you know, just a guy who’s worked for me before. And, if I’d have known that that pub was his local, I would have put him onto it in the first place. I might have had a fuckin’ result by now!’

Phil felt put out at the implication that this other employee was more efficient at his job than him but before he could say anything in his defence, he noticed that the line had gone quiet; Justin Foster had cut the call.
