Phil Thomas pulled the phone sharply away, his ears still ringing from the sound of Justinâs yelling and cursing.
âWhat do you mean she hasnât been in the fuckinâ pub for weeks?â he raged. âI thought it was her local! You should have nabbed her when you had the fuckinâ chance. Fancy following the wrong car, you useless bastard.â His anger had left him panting and he paused to regain his breath before he resumed. âEh, I hope that fuckinâ junkie you paid hasnât warned her off.â
âNo, I donât think so,â said Phil, trying to placate him.
âHow dâyou know she can be trusted?â
âWell, I did let her know what would happen to her if she grassed.â
âI donât care. Iâm taking no fuckinâ chances! I want her out of the picture. Sheâs too much of a fuckinâ liability.â
âOK, what do you want me to do?â
Justin was quiet for a moment and Phil guessed he must have been thinking of something.
âYou said the junkie goes in the pub nearly all the time, didnât you?â
âYeah, seems to hang out there a lot, boss.â
âRight, well I want you in there tomorrow night. As soon as she leaves the pub you ring me straightaway, right?â
âOK. And what do you want me to do after that?â
âFuck all, seeing as I canât trust you to get anything right.â
Phil felt a tremor of nerves. It didnât pay to get on the wrong side of Justin Foster so it was important to keep being useful to him.
âNo, I mean, whatâs the next job?â he asked tentatively.
âNever mind that, Iâve got other things to concentrate on at the moment. Just be there tomorrow night, and donât fuckinâ let me down, then Iâll think about what to do with you after that. But thereâs no way I want you in that Rose and Crown once weâve dealt with the fuckinâ junkie. Too many people know your face. Anyway, Iâve got someone else working inside the pub.â
âWho?â
âYou ask too many fuckinâ questions! Itâs nobody you know, just a guy whoâs worked for me before. And, if Iâd have known that that pub was his local, I would have put him onto it in the first place. I might have had a fuckinâ result by now!â
Phil felt put out at the implication that this other employee was more efficient at his job than him but before he could say anything in his defence, he noticed that the line had gone quiet; Justin Foster had cut the call.
